Sam First Piano Fest: Andy Milne Trio with David Robaire & Clarence Penn

A former student of Oscar Peterson, Milne moved to New York City in 1991 and connected with the M-BASE Collective as a core member of saxophonist Steve Coleman’s bands. For the next decade, he performed frequently with Coleman and with Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby. In 1998, after this formative apprenticeship, Milne set out to conquer his own musical frontiers, forming the quintet Dapp Theory. Since that time Milne has led and co-led numerous projects with a diverse array of artists, exploring multiple musical cultures and artistic forms. He is building a legacy of ambitious collaborations, including “Strings & Serpents”, the interdisciplinary collaboration combining two pianos and two kotos, synthesizing Japanese and Western traditions along with animation depicting The Rainbow Serpent Mythology. This journey has shaped his artistic backbone and helped to produce his most celebrated works, two recent Sunnyside Records releases: “The Seasons of Being” and “The reMission” both won Juno Awards for Jazz Album of the Year: Group in 2019 and 2021 respectively. While “The reMission” explores the intimacy of the piano trio at the intersections of texture and groove, “The Seasons of Being” is an exquisite and heartful examination of the body, spirit and mind on music, using the diagnostic principles of homeopathy to captivate the emotional characterization of each soloist.
